How VAT is calculated
To add VAT to a price, multiply it by 1 plus the rate: at 21%, price × 1.21. To remove it, divide by that same number: price with VAT ÷ 1.21.
Example: a product costs €100 without VAT. At 21% you pay €21 of VAT and the total is €121. If you only know the total is €121, the net price is 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100.
VAT (IVA) rates in Spain
- 21% (standard): most goods and services.
- 10% (reduced): for example, some prepared foods, passenger transport or hospitality.
- 4% (super-reduced): basic goods such as bread, milk, eggs, fruit or books.
Rates and what they apply to can change. Check the Spanish Tax Agency if you need certainty for invoices or taxes.
