Emergency fund
An emergency fund is money you set aside for surprises: a breakdown, an unexpected bill or losing your income for a while. It is the foundation of calm finances.
How much to save
The usual rule is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses (housing, food, utilities, transport, debt payments). For example, if your basic costs are €1,200 a month, your fund would be between €3,600 and €7,200.
If your income varies, as with a freelancer, many people prefer a bigger cushion of 6 to 12 months.
Where to keep it
What matters is that it is accessible and safe. You should be able to use it quickly without risk of losing part of it.
- A savings account separate from your everyday one, so you do not spend it by accident.
- If it pays some interest, better, but the priority is being able to withdraw it when you need it.
- It is not a good idea to keep it in investments that could fall just when you need the money.
How to build it step by step
- Work out how much you spend each month on essentials.
- Set a small first goal, such as one month of expenses.
- Set up an automatic transfer on payday, even a small amount.
- Raise the goal gradually until you reach your target.
What counts as an emergency
An emergency is something unexpected and necessary: a repair, a medical urgency or losing your job. Holidays or sales are not. If you use the fund, refill it as soon as you can.
Why it comes before investing
Without a cushion, a surprise can force you to sell investments at a bad time or take out an expensive loan. That is why it is usually the first step.
Keep 3 to 6 months of essential expenses somewhere safe and easy to reach, and only touch it for real emergencies.
