Inflation calculator

Indicative result. Not financial advice.

How it is calculated

Inflation builds up year after year, like compound interest. To know what something that costs a given amount today will cost in n years, multiply by (1 + inflation)n.

Example: with 3% inflation for 10 years, something that costs €1,000 today will cost about €1,344. In reverse, €1,000 kept earning nothing will buy what about €744 buys today.

Why it matters

Leaving money idle makes it lose purchasing power every year. That is why it is worth looking at returns after inflation. To understand the concept better, read the guide What is inflation?.

Real inflation changes every year. This tool assumes a constant figure, so it is only an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What inflation rate should I use?

You can use the latest annual CPI figure published by the INE, or any number you want to simulate, such as 2% or 3%.

How much does my money lose with 2% inflation?

Each year it buys roughly 2% less. Over 10 years, €1,000 will buy what about €820 buys today.
