What is the Ibex 35?

The Ibex 35 is the main index of the Spanish stock market. It groups 35 of the largest and most actively traded companies and works as a thermometer of how the market is doing.

What a stock index is

An index is not something you buy directly: it is a number that summarises how a group of shares is performing. If, taken together, the Ibex 35 companies are worth more, the index goes up.

How to read it

The Ibex 35 is expressed in points, not euros. What matters is the percentage change. If the index moves from 10,000 to 10,500 points, it has risen 5%.

Which companies are in it

It usually includes banks, energy companies, telecoms, fashion and infrastructure firms, among others. The list is reviewed periodically: companies come in and out depending on their size and trading activity.

They do not all weigh the same. Larger companies have more influence on the index than smaller ones.

What it means when it rises or falls

One day up or down says little. It is more useful to look at the trend over months or years.

How to follow it or invest in it

You can check the Ibex 35 in Ondexi's markets section. To invest in it, people use products that replicate it, such as some index funds or ETFs. Before doing so, it is worth understanding their fees and risks.

In short

The Ibex 35 is a number that summarises how 35 large Spanish companies are doing on the stock market. It is measured in points and read through its percentage change.
